The genetics network of Pinar del Río is the best of the country since it shows the lowest mortality rate in congenital disorders and also promising results in several indicators during a decade of work.
According to Deysi Licourt Otero, head of the genetics program in the province and chief of the Medical genetics Department, most of the programs to assist the population show rates over the average in the Island making the service a centre of reference.
Licourt Otero noted that apart from the headquarters, they have 11 facilities in the municipality with specialists in Cytogenetics, Imagenology and Obstetrics, who are also dedicated to teaching and research.
The work is complemented by state-of-the-art equipment that allows the utmost reliability in the results.
Although there are still weaknesses in the research field, at present they carry out several projects related to the attention of people with mental disabilities, studies of congenital anomalies and the contribution of the environmental genome in leukaemia as part of common illnesses, among others.
