A total of six medals, one gold, two silvers and three bronzes, were won by the archers of the province in the National Elite Tournament of the sport held in Santiago de Cuba.
Hugo Franco, at present the best Cuban archer, won gold in the individual Olympic round and silver in the double 70 modality, being the most valuable athlete of the competition. In regard to female competitors, young Gennys Sánchez and Rosangel Obregón, athletes of the national team, won silver and bronze in the Olympic round and the double 70, in that order. In general, Pinar del Rio finished second in the event, just to points from Santiago de Cuba, which is an improvement compared to the third position of last tournament. The next events for local archers will be the national school and junior championships scheduled from May 16-21 in Sancti Spíritus. For several years in a row, archery in Pinar del Rio has being the most integral sport in the country.
